Grand Funk Railroad - Closer To Home - Shea Stadium 1971

Category: Funk, Rock

http://www.petitiononline.com/GFRMDM/petition.html This is a clip from the legendary Shea Stadium Concert that broke The Beatles ticket sales record. A record that still stands today (38 years later) & will forever stand. I'm proud to say this video is in the permanent archives of Shea Stadium & The N.Y. Mets. Yes, this is the real deal, the Grand Funk Railroad we all love at the peak of their great career. Grand Funk Railroad is America's Band. This is a historic concert that folks still rave about. If you were there, feel lucky, because you were a part of history. This is considered by many to be one of the greatest concerts in the short history of "Hard Rock/Metal". Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle." It is amazing that this record has stood this long, a testament to how great & influincial this band was in the early 1970's. Check out the link below to see what Mark Farner has to say today about this historic performance. Grand Funk Railroad ruled the world from '69-'76 becoming the first band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums! Some call it "Industrial Rock". You'll see no lazers or pyro here, just some of the greatest music ever performed live. Shea Stadium suffered structural damage after this show. In fact, the concert was almost stopped because Shea Stadium was oscillating from the excited crowd. Click on the link below & sign the online petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now! http://www.petitiononline.com/GFRMDM/petition.html Everyone go here for Mark Farner's interview about this show: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article_entertainment.jsp?ymd=20080527&content_id=2779701&vkey=entertainment&fext=.jsp Everybody, listen to me, And return me, my ship. Im your captain, Im your captain, Although Im feeling mighty sick. Ive been lost now, days uncounted, And its months since Ive seen home. Can you hear me, can you hear me, Or am I all alone. If you return me, to my home port, I will kiss you mother earth. Take me back now, take me back now, To the port of my birth. Am I in my cabin dreaming, or are you really scheming, To take my ship away from me? Youd better think about it, I just cant live without it. So, please dont take my ship from me. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... I can feel the hand, of a stranger, And its tightening, around my throat. Heaven help me, heaven help me, Take this stranger from my boat. Im your captain, Im your captain, Although Im feeling mighty sick. Everybody, listen to me, And return me, my ship. Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Ohhhh ... Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Im getting closer to my home ... Repeated to fade

engine22emt: You obviously know nothing about Vietnam. LBJ was not behind JFK’s death. LBJ inherited Vietnam’s mess from JFK who inherited it from previous policies. Too many young men died for absolutely nothing. I know…I grew up in the ’60s and it was just a total massacre. But pls. read up on the events that led up to Vietnam in the late ’50s…France was there first anyway.

This is to those of you old enough to remember this stuff,Do you remember how you would never hear of murders, fighting over ‘hoods, rioting, racial strife and other stuff at these shows?,When did it all change?

  7. Geepsterr Says:

True top band in the country by New York Daily News Nationwide Readers’ Poll for 1971 but DO YAH THINK the immense billboard over Time Square and New York Daily news being a NY paper may have had a bit of influence? Now relative obscurity. I loved GFR, my #1 fave in ‘71.

    packed…the stats speak for themselves…
they are in the hall of fame because the common Amercian working man and women paid for it!!!! you see?
In other words: they are in the working class vote for the Hall of Fame!!!! and thats all that matters!!!

  9. Spectrime Says:

    1:38 epileptic atack !!! XD

  10. crookedtrucker Says:

The so-called “Rock and Roll” Hall of fame is a joke.

  11. Carvinn Says:

I love seeing videos of the Vietnam war with old songs dubbed over them, this time was Epic WIN!

  12. blackmoreonstage Says:

    True Hard Rockmusic!!!!!!!

  13. vinnynumbnuts Says:

Love the thumbs down. I find more truth there and especially when I click on the word, “Show” to the right of the commentator’s name. But they’re not always right at times.

  14. 00RockyAngel00 Says:

Great video! You’re right, HD8EVO, GFR were as hard rock as anything out there. The abomination that was Tull winning the 1st Grammy for metal seems to have started a wave of metalhead, genre-snob “That’s not metal” inspections which, for some reason, Black Sabbath is the only band from the late 60s/early 70s who is allowed to pass. Aside from jazz, whenever possible, the American artist (GFR, MC5, Blue Cheer, etc.) is denied credit for being the innovator. GFR RULES!

  15. clubninjarock Says:

I bet the Pie blew them off the stage. Long live Marriott!!

  16. sunshineband29 Says:

**** the “hall of fame” (lower case on purpose) they seem to ignore all the 70’s best ****… GFR , KISS, BOA , (has Alice been put in there?)…Load of rubbish…. (From England!!!..)

  20. afigegoznaet Says:

    Love these guys…
Mark may be not the best best guitar player, but what a voice!!!
    A real frontman!
RnR hall of fame is just a dog medal, nobody looks at that, the only thing that matters is their music, and if it touches me ho heard them 25 years after they issued their last album (and not only me) - that’s a real kind of music…
    Some kind of wonderful :)

  21. battydiva Says:

I saw these guys live a few times back in the 70s and they always delivered a great show.

  22. Seishirou Says:

    brilliant song

  23. tired57 Says:

    wonderful era….greatest group.

  24. Schrittwieser Says:

Thw Jackson Five were really a motown band.I would say in 1971 Led Zepplin ruled and then The Who and Grand Funk 3rd. Led Zepplin 2 was the first Album I bought. I love Grand Grand Funk but I liked songs on earlier Albums and songs not written by them like Inside Looking Out and what Mark Farner calls our generations national athem Gimme Shelter love their version.

  25. artmaniac53 Says:

    Awasome!!!
One of the best bands ever!!!
    Thanks for post!

  30. PackedFunk Says:

GFRxR was a real people’s band. Rejected by critics, GFRxR still became the first band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums. They broke The Beatles ticket sales record at New York’s Shea Stadium in ‘71. Despite all this sucess, they remain ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Please sign the petition above to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR now!
